John 17.21 That you may be one so that the world may believe Christian churches are to be in solidarity supporting each other. Although churches may express themselves in different languages, with different traditions and customs, and varied forms of worship, they share a common witness.
2 Cor 8: 13 -14a I do not mean that there should be relief for others and pressure on you, but it is a question of fair balance between your present abundance and their need. Because of the inequity of resources between our churches, we support Shemá Church by providing assistance for the support of the pastor and the church’s ministries.
To share experiences that deepen mutual appreciation and spiritual solidarity in the challenges of each church’s life, faith and culture and to support the ministries of Shemá church with material and monetary resources.
Description of Activities
Our partnership with Shemá Baptist Church, a member of the Fraternity of Baptist Churches in Cuba, is one of more than 20 such partnerships with Alliance of Baptists’ churches. Our activities are wide-ranging including periodic visits to Cuba and hosting our partner pastors to visit us.
We are in spiritual solidarity with them in the practice of bimonthly times of shared silence (contemplative meditation). We exchange photos and news of our churches via email which is in turn shared with the congregation in the Currents newsletter and our bulletin board. Periodically we sponsor fundraising activities such as themed first Sunday lunches after service and the Christmas Angel Tree, to support their ministries and facilitate their pastors’ and congregations’ access to such basics as over-the-counter medications. Also, we share Mission Minutes in services and participate in activities of the Alliance Cuba partner churches.
